Vanessa Hudgens's New Tattoo Is a Sweet Tribute to a Late Playwright

Vanessa Hudgens got a brand-new tattoo that’s a shout-out to one of her upcoming film roles. The High School Musical alum has been named one of the stars of the upcoming Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed film adaptation of 1990 play Tick, Tick… Boom!, and to commemorate her experience working on the film, she got a brand-new tattoo over the weekend that reads “Cages or Wings.” The phrase is a lyric from the song “Louder Than Words,” which is featured in the play.

“FOR JL,” she captioned a photo of her new ink. Her caption refers to Jonathan Larson, the man who wrote the musical to be a retelling of his own personal story as an upcoming composer in New York City. Larson also wrote Rent, the live version of which Hudgens also starred in back in 2019, but he died the night before the show’s first off-Broadway performance. Tick, Tick… Boom! doesn’t have an official release date, but it’ll likely premiere in 2021. Check out Hudgens’s tattoo tribute to the project above.
