Long-time General Hospital cast member Bergen Williams has died aged 62 after battling a rare disease. The actress reportedly suffered from an inherited condition known as Wilson’s Disease.

The late star, whose full name is Laura Lynn ‘Bergen’ Williams, was battling an illness which causes copper to accumulate in vital organs, including the brain.

Tragically, the condition can be treated if diagnosed early enough, but if left for too long, it can cause kidney problems, liver failure and even death.

In a statement posted today to Bergen’s 2,028 Twitter followers, her sister wrote: “Bergen Williams succumbed to the ravages of Wilson’s Disease surrounded by loving family.

“Bergen was a writer, inventor and actress who played Big Alice on the TV soap General Hospital.’

Bergen starred as Big Alice Gunderson on the longest-running soap opera in production for over a decade from July 2001 to December 2014.

On the show, she portrayed a live-in housekeeper who worked for the Quartermaine family at their mansion.

Bergen’s followers and General Hospital fans were quick to send their condolences to the soap star’s grieving family.

“RIP Bergen Williams and condolences to the family.”

“Wow… A true GH legend …..Ms Williams was an institution at the Quartermaine household,” added Twitter user @john_jennings50.

Bergen’s sister took the time to reply to some of her fans’ kind words and shared some insight into how her illness had affected her acting work.

Responding to the comments she wrote: “Her disease made it impossible for her to speak her lines the same way as before so they made her quit.

“I’m sad they didn’t just give Big Alice Wilson’s Disease on the show so she could keep acting and keep her healthcare!

“Dang GH!!!! Thanks for condolences. She loved her fans!”
