Eddie Van Halen’s Son Wolfgang Performed His No. 1 Single ‘Distance’ in Honor of His Father

Wolfgang Van Halen is continuing to honor his late father Eddie Van Halen through his music. The 29-year-old musician released “Distance” as a bonus track to his debut album Mammoth WVH, and the song just hit No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart.

Wolfgang took to Instagram to share the good news, and opened up about reaching the milestone without his father by his side. “Our first single ‘Distance’ is officially #1,” he wrote in the caption of the post. “Thank you so much for listening, and thank you to the incredible @MammothWVH team.”

“Wish you were here to see this, Pop ❤️,” he added.

In a recent segment on Today, Wolfgang performed an acoustic version of “Distance” and shared how much the song means to him. “I think it’s almost like a mantra for you when you lose someone—anyone that plays a large role in your life,” he said of the song’s chorus: “No matter what the distance is, I will be with you. No matter what the distance is, I’ll be okay.”

“That’s my mantra when I think about my dad,” he explained.

Eddie passed away from cancer in October 2020, and Wolfgang has been candid about the emotional toll the loss has taken on him and his family. In November, he told Howard Stern that losing his father is “always gonna hurt.”

“Some days are better than others,” he said. “The pain is still there always, but you just kind of figure out how to carry it a little better as time goes on.”

The two always bonded over music, which is both beautiful and hard for him because it’s a lifelong passion that will remind him of his dad. “We had such a close connection and now, for the rest of my life, there’s no way I’ll never be able to think about him no matter what I do, which is good, but also hurts a lot,” he said.

Wolfgang’s debut album Mammoth WVH, to be released on June 11, 2021, will feature 14 songs—and we have no doubt it would have made his father proud. Preorder it here.
