Winter HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon is coming, and it has George R.R. Martin’s approval. The author reviewed the first episode in a blog post published to his website, saying he’d seen a rough cut and loved it.
He also teased that viewers would “fall in love” with the cast “only to have your heart broken later when… but no, that would be telling.” He then ended the post musing “I think the Targaryens are in very good hands. Anticipate away. I do not think you will be disappointed.”
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which, according to HBO, is set 200 full years before Game of Thrones and chronicles the story of House Targaryen.
The show focuses on King Viserys Targaryen “a warm, kind, and decent man,” who wants to carry on his grandfather’s legacy; Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King who “possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen;” Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child and a dragonrider; and Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne “who possesses the true blood of the dragon.”
