Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are one of Hollywood’s most private couples, rarely speaking out about their relationship and treating us to only a handful of red carpet appearances over the years.
However, it’s been announced that the couple have welcomed their first child together and chose to name their baby boy River after Joaquin’s late brother and actor who tragically died in 1993.
The love story between Joaquin, 45, and Rooney, 35, began in 2012 when they first met on-set of the movie Her. In the film, the pair play a married couple – perhaps a foreshadowing of their real-life future together.
Joaquin was pretty enamoured with the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star from the beginning and once told Vanity Fair: ‘She’s the only girl I ever looked up on the internet.
‘We were just friends, email friends. I’d never done that. Never looked up a girl online.’
But it wasn’t until a few years later that they began dating, shortly after wrapping up shooting on the film Mary Magdalene in 2016.
The following year, Joaquin and Rooney made their red carpet debut as a couple when they attended the Cannes Film Festival.
During the closing ceremony, where Joaquin bagged the coveted best actor award for his role in Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, the actor was seen affectionately placing his hand on Rooney’s lap just in case we were in any doubt about the nature of their relationship.
Things began to get serious between the two and it was claimed they had a ‘blessing ceremony’ in June 2017 in order to cement their commitment to one another.
That year, Joaquin confirmed he and Rooney were living together and did cute, regular things like spending 10 hours watching true crime documentaries. A source later revealed they had bought a home together in the Hollywood Hills.
An insider told Us Weekly: ‘They don’t really like to go out.
‘They mainly just like to be with each other as the two of them. They’re in their own bubble.’
Fast forward to two years later and reports emerge that Joaquin and Rooney are engaged. The actress sparked rumours after she was seen wearing a ring on her engagement finger.
From there, the pair ramped up their joint red carpet appearances and Rooney supported Joaquin on his international promo tour for Joker. They posed together at the blockbuster’s premiere, Venice Film Festival, Golden Globes and even the Oscars.
As he won the Tribute Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Joaquin made the rare move of honouring his love during his acceptance speech and said: ‘One last thing—somewhere here, I don’t know where, is a filthy dragon, and I want to rip its wings off and fasten a blanket and sleep with it forever.
‘I love you. Thank you.’
Sweet… in his own unique way.
Proving they’re a couple who like to support a good cause, Rooney and Joaquin joined the Drill Friday protest organised by Jane Fonda and were pictured among fellow marchers in February 2019.
Reports that the private couple were expecting their first child emerged in May but, due to the coronavirus pandemic, they kept a very low profile.
