Lauren London accepts Nipsey Hussle humanitarian honour at BET Awards

Lauren London made a brave return to the spotlight to accept her late boyfriend Nipsey Hussle’s honour at the BET Awards last night.

Nipsey, who died in March at the age of 33 after being shot multiple times, was honoured with the humanitarian award posthumously for his tireless work within the local communities of Los Angeles. He also won best male hip hop artist.

The late rapper’s family, including girlfriend Lauren, son Kross, daughter Emani and his parents, bravely took to the stage at the BET Awards on Sunday evening to received the prestigious award on Nipsey’s behalf.

In a short address to the star-studded audience, which included Rihanna and Cardi B, Lauren said: ‘I just want to thank you guys for all of the love and support and the marathon continues again.’

Nipsey’s mother Angelique Smith delivered a longer speech and said: ‘One of Ermias’s close friends was very traumatised.

‘I walked over to him and put my hands on his shoulder, and I told him, “Evan, look into my eyes, Evan”. I said, “You know that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience, right Evan? You understand that, right?”

‘So even though our bodies die, as they call it on this side of eternity, our spirits lives.’

Angelique continued: ‘We lift out of this vessel and we continue on, and then I felt a spirit of retribution and revenge when I had my hands on his shoulder and I had to talk ..

‘I was 100 percent present in the spirit and 100 percent absent in the body until I felt that spirit of retribution and revenge … I could tell I chased those spirits away from him.’

It’s the first time since Nipsey’s family have appeared publicly since they bravely hosted a public memorial for him at the Staples Center just a week after his death.

Noticeably missing was the rapper’s beloved brother Blacc Sam, whom he was known to have a particularly close relationship with.

In a touching tribute, the BET Awards red carpet was instead blue to honour the rapper’s favourite colour.
