Tom Ellis, 42, opened up in a new interview with Outlander’s Sam Heughan, 40, about how he almost starred alongside him in the show. The Lucifer actor revealed he auditioned for the part of Black Jack Randall, much to the surprise of the Jamie Fraser star.
Viewers love Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar in the hit Netflix series but many may be surprised to know he almost landed a major role in Outlander.
Ellis confided to Heughan: “I’m going to let you into a little secret.
“I auditioned for Outlander, not for Jamie Fraser but for Tobias Menzies’ part, ‘Black Jack’ Randall.
“I remember reading the script thinking, ‘This is really good.’”
Ellis was interviewing Heughan for a feature in the new issue of Square Mile magazine when he let this slip.
In response, the Outlander actor reacted with surprise, before voicing some concerns.
This was mainly to do with the harrowing season one storyline which sees Black Jack assault Jamie in the show.
Heughan replied: “Firstly, dude, I’m not sure how I’d have felt having you, I don’t know, assault me shall we say.”
Ellis agreed, adding: “Exactly. That sort of thing would have been quite tricky.”
However, his old friend from drama school admitted it would have been great to work with him.
Heughan continued: “That would have been quite tricky, but I know we would have had a great time.
“Actually, you would have been brilliant at that because Frank Randall is this charming, loveable character and then Black Jack, the other part you would have had to play, is just violent.

“It’s a great part. Tobias, of course, does an amazing job but that would have been so different.”
Of course, in the series the duel parts are played by The Crown actor Tobias Menzies.
He starred as both characters in the first three seasons of the Starz show.
Many fans will be left surprised by the news and what this alternate casting could have been like.
However, it would likely have meant Ellis would not have landed his lead role in the then FOX show Lucifer.
The Welsh actor has played the part since 2016 and is currently filming its sixth and final season.
During his conversation with Heughan, the Outlander actor also opened up about how he was surprised over the success of the show.
He said: “I never imagined… I remember the first day being driven in by my driver.
“He asked, ‘How long do you think it’s going to go for?’
“I was like, ‘Two years max, that will be it.’ We’re into our eighth year and we’re still going.”
Lucifer is available to stream on Netflix. Outlander is available on Amazon Prime Video.
