Earlier this month, Meghan Markle voiced her support for Black Lives Matter following the murder of George Floyd. Now, she and Prince Harry are doing what they can behind the scenes to combat racism online by quietly working with the Stop Hate for Profit campaign— created by the NAACP, Anti-Defamation League, and Color of Change—to ask businesses to stop advertising on Facebook as a way of protesting their lack of action regarding racism and hate speech on the platform.
As you may recall, Facebook did not remove Donald Trump’s racially charged “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” post, and the website continues to remain a hub for spreading misinformation. “99% of Facebook’s $70 billion is made through advertising,” it says on the Stop Hate for Profit website. “Let’s send Facebook a powerful message: Your profits will never be worth promoting hate, bigotry, racism, antisemitism and violence.”
