Along with abandoning their “senior” roles in the Royal Family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are also leaving behind Britain’s mainstream media.
The couple shared their revised media policy on their website, which includes them stepping away a system called the “Royal Rota,” which gives pool reporters from various British news organizations exclusive coverage of the Royal Family.
Reporters who participate in the “Royal Rota” system cover an event solo, then share their reporting with journalists from other outlets involved.
The UK media organizations involved in the pool system, which began over 40 years ago, include: The Daily Express, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, The Evening Standard, The Telegraph, The Times and The Sun.
The policy adjustment was borne out of the couple’s “wish to reshape and broaden access to their work,” according to their site.
In explaining the new policy, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were critical of the coverage by Britain’s royal correspondents.
“Britain’s Royal Correspondents are regarded internationally as credible sources of both the work of members of The Royal Family as well as of their private lives,” the couple’s website said.
“This misconception propels coverage that is often carried by other outlets around the world, amplifying frequent misreporting.”
Prince Harry has had a rocky relationship with Britain’s media, dating back to the death of mother, Princess Diana.
Harry brought up his distaste for the UK papers in a recent statement announcing Markle’s lawsuit against the owner of The Daily Mail for publishing a private letter she wrote to her dad.
“I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person,” Harry, 35, wrote.
“I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”
Prince Harry and Megan Markle will adopt a new media approach in the spring of 2020, which focuses more on “grassroots media organizations and young, up-and-coming journalists,” their site read.
Earlier Wednesday, the couple shocked the world when they announced in a statement they wanted to take a “progressive new role” and leave their roles as “senior” royals.
