Prince Harry reportedly found out his grandfather Prince Philip died just one hour before the news was broken to the British public.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at Windsor Castle on 9 April, while his grandson Harry and pregnant wife Meghan Markle were asleep in California, USA.

Officials at the US Embassy made several attempts to contact Harry while he was sound asleep at 3am, it's been claimed.

It is said that after repeated attempts, a representative from the Embassy called the Santa Barbara Sheriff's department and requested an officer went to the house to break the sad news in person before he found out about it on the news.

According to TMZ, an officer managed to make contact with somebody when they arrived at the house, who told Harry he needed to urgently call the Embassy.

Buckingham Palace released an official statement at midday in the UK, which is 4am in Los Angeles.

Following Philip's death and funeral, Harry paid tribute to his grandfather on World Earth Day as he vowed to continue the work he had done on protecting the environment.

Harry spoke out about biodiversity and the Duke of Edinburgh's role in conserving it in a video narrated for World Earth Day entitled "Hope Starts Here".

In a statement alongside the clip, he explained: "As we now begin to move towards an era of global recovery and regeneration, it's critical that we continue to look at the strengthening and protecting of biodiversity, not just as a value we hold – but as a responsibility that is vital to our way of life."

Referencing his grandfather, he continued: "On this Earth Day, I reflect on the generations of conservation champions, including my late grandfather, and feel proud and energised to continue doing my part in this legacy.

It is believed that Harry spent time with his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William after the funeral as it marked the first time he had seen them since his and Meghan's bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

A royal source told The Sun of their meeting: "It's early days but you'd hope this is exactly the first step Philip would have wished for.

"It is not known what was said behind closed doors and when the cameras were turned off, but it's unfathomable to think Megxit and Oprah did not come up.
