Richard Madden reveals he nearly became homeless before landing life-changing Game Of Thrones role

Richard Madden has revealed that he could barely afford food before landing his breakout role in Game of Thrones and finding fame.

The Bodyguard heartthrob – who now stars as Elton’s John’s manager and lover in the much-anticipated Rocketman – was close to being homeless before landing his breakout role in Game of Thrones back in 2011.

The Scottish actor, 32, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday as he spoke about how the series turned his career around.

‘I had like two options, I could buy one meal, or a newspaper and a pint,’ he said.

‘I got that phone call and I was on my last month’s rent and I asked my agent for an advance.’

Madden played Robb Stark in the first three seasons of Game of Thrones, before he was slaughtered at the Red Wedding at the end of Season 3.

The British actor also talked about playing John Reid, Elton John’s first manager and one-time boyfriend in the biopic Rocketman, which will be released on May 31.

‘I knew his music, the circle of life was the first one. I was very young. And now I’m kind of immersed with all his music which I love,’ he said.

‘I’m lucky enough to call him a friend now, which is lovely. He’s a beautiful man and the film is about compassion and struggle,’ he added.

Richard previously spoke about his money struggles before hitting the silver screen, admitting he survived on £3.70 a day during his journey to become an actor.

He told Jackal magazine: ‘I’m not bulls****ing you – I was completely broke. I used my savings to pay my last month’s rent and that was it. I thought, “After this, I don’t have any money. I’ll have to move back to my parents.”’

And Madden revealed he isn’t afraid to diversify his roles if it means earning money.

‘We all have to eat, and I’m sure at some point I’ll take a job for the money,’ he said. ‘Maybe I’ll use that to fund a smaller project for myself six months down the line.

‘I’ll put on some Lycra, I’ll be a superhero. People want entertainment and escapism and I’m not against that.’
