Countdown star Rachel Riley shared a bittersweet message as she reflected on losing her baby after she suffered a miscarriage last year. The mathematician, who married Russian professional dancer Pasha Kovalev, 41, in 2019, penned a heartfelt message on Twitter.

The couple share daughters Maven, two, and two-month-old Noa, but at one point last year they were also expecting another baby.

The 35-year-old admitted to “shedding tears” after the heartbreaking family loss.

In the early hours today, Rachel took the opportunity to share a poignant message, in view of his 692,000 followers.

“This time last year I was shedding a tear for the baby that wasn’t meant to be, this year we were dancing around with two little girls in tow,” the mathematician wrote.

“Whether you’ve had a great last year or whether 2021 was a tough one, wishing you all a happy, healthy and better 2022 ahead.”

She accompanied the post with a picture of her daughters Maven and Noa.

Fans of the Countdown favourite swiftly inundated the Channel 4 star with comments.

Rhoda Borrocks replied: “You poor thing, that’s a lot to cope with at the best of times. I hope that this year is kinder to you, stay safe.”

“Sorry to hear of your loss Rachel. Wish you and Pasha a Happy New Year 2022 with your beautiful girls,” Fiona Smith commented.

Hugh Oxburgh remarked: “Sorry you lost a baby, but very pleased that you and Pasha now have two little girls. Looking forward to your return to Countdown, but I hope you manage to get some rest in the meantime.”

“Thank you for this Rachel – and saying it openly, it brings comfort to all of us. It’s the hardest loss on the planet. Lots of love,” Ioana Barboux added.

The former Strictly contestant addressed her miscarriage in a candid interview in 2021.

The Countdown star said she was “considered old biologically” according to some medical advice she was given and admitted she was nervous about trying for another baby following the heartbreak.

Rachel bravely explained: “I had a miscarriage between the two pregnancies, so you can’t count your chickens.

“At 35 I’m considered old biologically. Thankfully, I seem to get pregnant easily which I don’t take for granted.”

The TV star added to OK! magazine: “We’ve planned a home birth because my daughter Maven arrived so quickly the midwives said, ‘Don’t even try to make it to the hospital this time.'”
