They Put a Ring On It! All of the Celebrity Engagements of 2020 — So Far

Kat Luna & Alex Garrido

The American Idol contestants — who auditioned as a duo last season — are engaged, PEOPLE has exclusively revealed on Oct. 22.

Kat & Alex told PEOPLE about their big moment, which happened at The Sound Emporium where the two created their first EP. (And both of their families were present!)

Garrido got down on one knee while the pair were recording an “acoustic version” of their track “Make Me Make You” in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Kat and I performed the song in the live room and during the bridge of the song I dropped down on one knee and popped the question in front of our family and friends,” he said. “I told her how much I loved her and how I want to always be the best man that I can be for her.”

Garrido told PEOPLE that Luna thought it was a prank, but once she realized “it was all very real,” she started to cry.

“It was a powerful moment proposing in the same room where our careers in Nashville started,” he added. “Not to mention some of our favorite musicians performed in that same room like John Mayer and Chris Stapleton. “

Luna told PEOPLE she’s excited for the new chapter in their lives, and she loves the ring Garrido got her, too!

“When Alex got down on one knee and I saw the ring I couldn’t believe that he got the ring of my dreams,” she said. “It is exactly what I wanted down to the little diamond halo underneath.”

“I am most excited about getting to spend the rest of my life with the man of my dreams and getting to travel the world inspiring others with the one I love,” she said.

When the pandemic hit earlier this year, Silva and Rusev — whose ups and downs are documented on TLC’s hit franchise — quickly moved in together. Planning a surprise proposal was tricky while in such close quarters with his future wife, Rusev admitted.

“It was really hard to find the ring, make calls, make the reservation for the boat, for dinner,” said Rusev, a masseuse from Bulgaria who met Silva on social media.

After saying “yes” to Rusev, Silva quickly called her teen daughters, Aniko and Aspen, with her happy news. “They mean the most to me, and Georgi knows they come first and foremost in my life. He accepts them and me as a mom, and they get along very well,” said Silva. “We already kind of feel like a little family unit.”

The proposal was a total surprise for Young, who thought the trip was planned to celebrate their anniversary. With that, Johnson said, “Brian’s 88-year-old mother took off her wedding ring and passed it down the table till it got to Brian and he got down on one knee. I was sobbing uncontrollably and he said ‘Will you marry me?’ and I said yes!”

Maillian put the ring on Johnson’s finger and when Johnson took it off to give back to his mom, her soon-to-be mother-in-law told her: “You can keep it on until the rest of the day!”

After they became engaged, Johnson said laughing, “I was like how the heck did that happen? I was saying I’m never going to get married again.” (She was previously married to real estate agent Billy Potter and later music producer Danny Sims, father of their daughter Anansa.)
