FIFA 23 is the UK Christmas number one for video games – Games charts17 December

Thanks to the World Cup, EA’s FIFA franchise is going out with a bang, as Call Of Duty takes second place and God Of War third.

EA’s FIFA games are no stranger to the UK number one spot at Christmas, but with the World Cup taking place in December there was never any chance that it wouldn’t be the Christmas number one.

Sales rose by 67% over the previous week, making it an easy victory for FIFA 23, which happens to have French player Kylian Mbappé as its male cover star. This is also the last entry in the franchise to be published by EA, after a falling out with FIFA over cost of licensing their name.

The rest of the chart is largely as you’d expect, with Call Of Duty in second place, key PlayStation 5 title God of War Ragnarök in third, and a lot of Nintendo Switch titles.

It’s impossible to tell exactly how Pokémon Violet and Scarlet did though as, unlike other charts from around the world, the UK treats them as two separate games. If combined though they would almost certainly be in at least fourth place.

Although most major launches have usually already taken place by early December, there was a new entry this week, with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion debuting at number eight.

As you’d expect, given the original was a PSP game and Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a PlayStation exclusive, the majority of sales were on Sony’s consoles, with 70% on PlayStation 5 and 12% on PlayStation 4.

As ever, the UK charts only include physical sales at retail, but for once the picture is unlikely to be very different if digital sales are included, given the time of year and the titles involved.
