KATE Middleton has won praise in the past for her “thrifty” approach to fashion, but it’s Princess Anne’s wardrobe that has really stood the test of time.
The Queen’s daughter, who turns 69 today, is still wearing clothes she wore almost 40 years ago today.
The Princess Royal is often to referred to as the most hardworking member of the royal family and is still a keen horse rider so it’s no surprise she still fits into her timewarp wardrobe.
Here we take a look at Anne’s ensembles that have stood the test of time…
MILITARY TRENCH – WORN FOR 38 YEARS
Princess Anne has been relying on this cream and blue military coat to cut a sophisticated figure at events for almost four decades.
Anne first wore the coat to the prestigious Royal Ascot back in 1980, picking out its navy accents with a matching back, gloves and court shoe, as well as a cream and blue netted hat.
It had another outing when she was meeting rowers at the Henley Regatta in 1988.
She next wore the piece ten years later to the same event and not again for 21 years when she dug it out in 2011 for the Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday.
It had an update in the form of a new hate for the Buckingham Palace garden party in 2015.
It was most recently worn last year when she attended Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey, still fitting Anne like a glove.
FORMAL BEIGE COAT – WORN FOR 35 YEARS
The fitted beige coat has played a major part in Anne’s wardrobe making its debut in 1980 at Trooping the Colour before making a second appearance in Epsom in 1983.
Anne deemed it worthy of a visit to Royal Ascot back in 1991, and two decades later it had resurgence at the very same event.
Its most recent appearance at Ascot came three years ago, and while Anne’s accessories may have changed she has worn the same retro print silk dress underneath throughout.
PEACHES AND CREAM ENSEMBLE – WORN FOR 28 YEARS
This thoroughly 80s ensemble was worn by Anne back in 1987 when she attended Trooping the Colour.
Fashion may have moved on but her style remained the same when she wore it again to the Chelsea Barracks in 2008.
A third occasion came in 2012 when Anne visited South Africa and attended church in the same ensemble.
It was worn a fourth time when she visited the Women’s Institute back in 2015 ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday.
FLORAL WRAP DRESS – WORN FOR 27 YEARS
The Princess’ Maureen Baker floral wrap dress got some serious exposure when it made its debut at her brother Prince Charles’ wedding to Diana Spencer back in 1981.
And when it came to Lady Rose Windsor’s wedding in 2008 Anne followed the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ attitude, wearing the exact same ensemble 27 years on.
AZTEC PRINT SUIT – WORN FOR 26 YEARS
This Aztec print wouldn’t look out of place on a hanger today and it has certainly stood the test of time for Anne.
Another one of her Maureen Baker pieces, the suit was paired with a matching hat back in 1988 and then again in 1992 to the wedding of Lady Helen Windsor and Tim Taylor.
It got a second Ascot outing in 1994 and then reemerged in 1995 she wore it to VE Day commemorations.
It was most recently sported by the Princess at Ascot in 2015.
LILAC WOOL COAT – WORN FOR 25 YEARS
Pastels have had somewhat of a resurgence in recent years thanks to the trend of millennial pink, so it is no wonder Anne is still has been wearing her lilac coat for 25 years.
It was first worn in 1979 when she paid a visit to Toronto for an inspection of the troops, it made a second appearance three years later when evening event in London.
In 2001 she wore it again to attend church in Sandringham on Christmas Day.
She last sported it on December 25 once again but this time she removed the coat’s belt to give it a more flowing outline.
STATEMENT EVENING ENSEMBLE – WORN FOR 20 YEARS
One of Anne’s loudest outfits, the puffed sleeved sateen gown was worn by Anne to the premiere of Never Ending Story II in 1990.
She repeated the loud and proud look for Constantine of Greece’s 70th birthday party back in 2010.
THE NAUTICAL NUMBER – WORN FOR TEN YEARS
This yellow and blue coat has proven a hit for Anne over the past decade, first wearing it to accompany the Queen to Royal Ascot.
It made a second appearance a year later when she attended the graduation of the Junior Soldiers in Harrogate and then again a year later at the Royal Norfolk Show.
She wore it just a few months ago when she attended the wedding of Lady Gabriella Windsor in May.
