I used to work at a hotel – here's why you DO NOT drink from the glasses & why the duvets aren’t as fresh as you think

WE'RE all thinking about a little getaway right now – and we love nothing more than staying in a plush hotel.

But now a former hotel worker has revealed the secrets of the trade you might want to think again – especially about walking barefoot on the carpets!

Janessa Richard, from Canada, is ready to spill all the tea.

Before becoming pregnant, the now 26-year-old mum used to work in a hotel a few years ago and has since gone viral with her ''Confessions of an ex-hotel worker'' TikTok videos.

''I just want to mention that this is based on my personal experience and the hotel that I worked at.

''Not ALL hotels are like this!'' she insisted.

Number one, according to her, is: ''NEVER EVER, and I repeat, NEVER walk barefeet on the carpets!''

Though they are vacuumed in-between each guest, Janessa revealed the hotel staff rarely washes and deep cleans them.

''And when I say rarely, I mean like maybe once a year…

''So always make sure to wear socks or slippers!''

Janessa's second tip is for those who want their hot breakfast – which you've paid for – but who are leaving too early.

''You can always ask the staff to make you a ''to-go'' bag with a few items in it!''

If you're thinking of booking a hotel in the upcoming days, Janessa insists you do it through the hotel directly.

''If you book through a third party – such as Expedia – your room and room type are not actually guaranteed,'' she explained.

Even if you wanted a refund, Janessa also added, it would have to be done via Expedia or the third party's website you made the booking on.

The next secrets are, unfortunately, again to do with hygiene.

Unless you've never stayed at a hotel, you'd know that almost every room comes with a bottle of water and a couple of drinking glasses.

''I would not recommend you drink from those glasses,'' she said.

''They're often not changed in-between guests, as long as they ''look'' clean.''

She reassured that obviously, if they've been used, these will be cleaned and replaced with clean ones.

''But if they look like they haven't been touched or haven't been drank out of, they will leave it for the next guest.''

Once you've asked for a new set of clean glasses, inspect the duvet – does it feel fresh?

Turns out, these aren't as fresh as you'd expect them to be.

''Most hotels,'' Janessa said, ''do not wash their duvets and comforters.

''They wash them maybe once a year which is really f**king gross!''

This brings us to another secret Janessa shared – the ''100% satisfaction guarantee'' policy.

''If you find one little thing you're not satisfied with and bring it up to the manager, they might be able to compensate your room!''

''Nah it like this at every hotel,'' one former employee added.

''Understaffed and underpaid.

''So you have to cut corners to get through your shift.''

Another one agreed: ''I can 100% confirm this!''
