A new appreciation for “Brokeback Mountain” inspired Victor Li to revisit the “sustained melancholy” of the Wyoming mountains and plains for his spring collection, which also served as a backdrop for the launch of his first women’s collection.
The look: Western wear meets street style.
Quote of note: “I took a road trip through Wyoming’s vast and still-life setting, into the idyllic yet lonesome, mountains. Red dust trails paved the paths in the rear view mirror, burnt orange cliffs emerged and passed by the car window, and the lonely sky cast an ethereal shadow, draping over the majestic mountains that filled my peripheral vision.”

Standout pieces: A variety of denim finishes — everything from dark and raw to tie-dyed and printed — was intended to be reminiscent of the Western landscape and worked best for her in a cropped blazer with asymmetrical closures over a knee-length skirt in a dark denim finish. For the guys, Li’s strong tailoring skills were evident in a double-breasted wool overcoat as well as an exploded plaid coat.
The takeaway: While the patchwork distressed and tie-dye denim suits missed the mark, the more classic pieces pushed the message forward and offered a new spin on American classics.
