Getting the perfect avocado is like an extreme sport.
Go too early and they are hard and bitter. Leave it one single day too long and they have gone brown and rotten. Your window for success is incredibly small and unpredictable.
But this clever and simple hack could be the answer to your avocado problem – just freeze them.
Food-lovers are freezing their avocados so they can be ripe and ready to eat at all times. And they say the delicious green fruit tastes just as good when it thaws.
A home cook shared a post on Facebook explaining how to freeze avocados so you can have it whenever you want – even when they’re not in season.
So, how do you actually freeze your avocado so you can use it again? Top tip – don’t just bung a whole avocado into your freezer, you need to do some prep first.
In the original Facebook post the woman used a cookie scoop to make dozens of avocado balls from her ripe fruit. She stuck them on a tray lined with tin foil, covered them and then popped them into the freezer for a few hours.
When they are all firm and frozen solid, you can take the balls off the tray and put them into freezer bags to optimise your use of space.
To thaw them out, simply pop the required amount into the fridge for 30 minutes and the balls should return to their original softness – although they might be quite cold.
Another top tip suggested in the comments was to add a splash of lemon juice to the avocado if you were slicing or mashing it, because that will prevent the fruit from going brown.
Other people in the comments were quick to share how they freeze their avocados in slices too.
First, find a perfectly ripe avocado. This is important. You don’t want the fruit to be under or over, it needs to be in that sweet spot where it is soft and a deep green colour.
Then, follow the same steps as for freezing balls of avocado, but just slice the avocado instead. You can spray each slice with a squirt of lemon juice.

However some did say that the end result of frozen avocado isn’t quite the same as eating them fresh.
‘It does change the texture, it is less creamy somehow so not ideal on its own,’ said one woman.
But it could be a great alternative for smoothies or dips.
If you want to give it a try, home cooks suggest avocados can be frozen for up to six months.
