Four on the market: Glebe houses

These four impressive properties were once good enough for the local clergy and still retain many original features and also come with ample grounds.

The Glebe, Cappaluane, Co Galway

€1.2m  Sherry FitzGerald Rainey (074) 912 2211

The former home of the rector of Eyrecourt was built about 1820 and has a nice bit of land going with it, amounting to 22 acres, including mature woods and pasture. The house has been modernised including underfloor heating and double-glazed sash windows, and its period features have been preserved. It has three bedrooms (two en-suite) and five reception rooms as well as a kitchen with a green Aga. The grounds also include a separate one-bedroom apartment with a balcony and a partly converted three-bedroom cottage.

The Rectory, Glebe, Fahan, Co Donegal

€650k Sherry FitzGerald O’Toole Madden (091) 870 449; Helen Cassidy Auctioneers (087) 246 3748

Cecil Frances Alexander, writer of hymns including ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ and the carol ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, lived for a time at the Church of Ireland rectory in Fahan, where her husband was rector. A plaque on the house, which was built in 1822, commemorates that fact. There was certainly plenty of space for creativity, as the rectory measures a 5,805 sq ft inside, on grounds of 4.15 acres with outbuildings. Inside, the ground floor has three reception rooms as well as a kitchen with an Aga, and there are six bedrooms (two en-suite) upstairs. The basement has a gym, games room and offices.

Dunleckney Glebe, Co Carlow

€595k  REA Sothern (059) 913 1218

Picture-postcard pretty, Dunleckney Glebe outside Bagenalstown dates from 1740, according to Carlow County Council’s record of protected structures. A century later it was remodelled and a cast-iron verandah was added, from which you look west at the River Barrow across the road. You can reach the verandah from the two main reception rooms – a drawing room and a dining room, both with marble fireplaces. The kitchen has an oil-fired range, and there’s a separate breakfast room, also with a fireplace. The first floor has four bedrooms, with a fifth bedroom and study on the top floor. It’s 3,423 sq ft in total, and the grounds come to 3.88 acres, with outbuildings.
