Decking can look great in any garden, but it needs cleaning around every three to six months in order to clear away dirt, mud and soil that can accumulate and sit on the wood. Dust, debris and stains can make the decking look dirty, and even end up damaging or discolouring the wood if it is not cleaned. While using a pressure washer may be the easiest way to clean a decking, they can be an expensive purchase so experts have shared alternative hacks.
The experts at Checkatrade said: “Decking makes for a great entertainment space in any garden, but in order to enjoy it all year round, you will need to stay on top of its maintenance.
“Thankfully, you can make a huge difference to the appearance of your decking using our guide. Here’s how to clean decking properly, with tips on cleaning decking grooves, algae and slippery decking.
“To save money, you may prefer to clean your decking without a pressure washer. This method will take longer but can still give a great finish. What’s more, it works really weak on decks that have mildew staining.”
To start with, it is really important to remove anything which is on the decking such as furniture or plant pots.
Next, sweep the decking to get rid of any loose dirt, moss and leaves before mixing bleach with washing up liquid and warm water.
The experts then recommended covering the decking with the mixture and allowing it to work for around 15 minutes.
Britons should then take a stiff-bristled brush and sweep away any stains before thoroughly rinsing the decking.
Bleach is really cheap to pick up, with Asda selling their 2L Just Essentials product for just 42p, which should last a few times, depending on the decking size.

It is really important to make sure none of the bleach mixture remains because not only could it damage the deck, it also isn’t the friendliest to both the environment or animals.
Also, make sure not to use this bleach solution if you have a plastic decking, as it may damage it. Instead, opt for white vinegar, washing up liquid or ammonia.
The experts added: “If you have children or pets, you may prefer not to use strong chemicals in your garden. Wondering how to clean decking naturally?
“It’s actually quite simple. Just mix one cup of vinegar with a gallon of water. You can then pour baking soda over your decking and use a stiff brush to work the water and vinegar into your boards before rinsing.
“Slippery decking can be a real issue and the last thing you need is a broken arm from a nasty fall. Luckily you can prevent it from becoming slippery by keeping it clean.
“Don’t allow algae or wet leaves to build up as this is the primary cause of slippery decking. If you want to clean slippery decking, you just need to use a stiff broom to sweep your decking regularly.
“This is especially important after a storm or wet weather. You can also use anti-slip products to stop your decking from becoming slippery in the first place.”
Once the decking is properly clean and tidy, Britons have a few options to protect it from the elements.
The pros noted: “We’d recommend doing this on a dry day as rain could interfere in the process. You can choose to stain, treat or paint your decking.”
For the best results, or if you are not getting the results you wanted, it may be best to hire a professional in order to get the space in great condition for summer.
Garden fences can also be cleaned in the same way, with a recommended one part white vinegar and four parts water.
The solution can be added to a spray to make it easier to target a vertical surface, before lightly scrubbing the mixture.
If your fence is looking a little tired after the winter months, painting it is also an option, which should be done during the spring or summer months.
