All the times Kate Middleton and sister-in-law Meghan Markle took style tips from each other

As Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton stepped out in style this week ahead of the Earthshot Prize in Boston, many royal fans were once again enchanted by the chic and elegant outfits worn by the Princess of Wales.

From a custom Roland Mouret suit in an an enviable berry hue, through to an ever regal dose of blue in vintage Chanel, Kate’s wardrobe and sense of style has been widely hailed by fans as flawless – and not for the first time either.

Since first stepping into the public limelight as the girlfriend, and now wife, of Prince William, Kate has amassed quite the following for her practical yet stylish ensembles, with many of her stand-out pieces rapidly selling out in stories and online.

Yet it’s not just Kate who has been labelled a style icon, but also her sister-in-law Meghan Markle too, with the pair often taking style cues from each other when attending high profile events.

Here, we take a closer look back at some of their post memorable style nods to each other.

Matching Monochrome

In one of the most recent nods to each other, earlier this year Kate wore a stunning black and white Roland Mouret Lamble gown, as she attended the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in central London back in May.

The chic floor skimming gown featured an off the shoulder detail and even sheer panelling at the back of the dress to add a touch more dimension and personality to the classic gown.

Fast forward two months to July, and her sister-in-law Meghan had opted for a near identical outfit as she attended the United Nations Headquarters to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.

Instead of a gown, Meghan wore a jumpsuit created by designer Gabriela Hearst, which featured the same monochrome colour palette and white off-the-shoulder detailing, albeit at a high price tag.

While Kate’s gown came in at a total of £2,700, Meghan’s was a far more costly £4,000 in total.

Wimbledon

In the Summer of 2018, with Wimbledon well and truly in full swing, it was actually Meghan that set the tone for the tournament when she stepped out in a bright sunshine yellow shift dress.

A mere ten days later, Kate also opted for a very similar dress in an equally fetching yellow hue, as she attended the tournament wearing a flutter sleeved fitted dress, complete with waist seaming detail.

Engagement dress

One of Kate’s most memorable outfits to date has to be the now iconic silk jersey wrap dress in royal blue which the Princess wore to announce her engagement to Prince William in 2010.

The dress, which was created by design house Issa, was widely lauded as “the ultimate wardrobe staple”, with the ultra flatter v-shaped neckline and above the knee cut making it a perfect and versatile garment for a variety of occasions.

Due to it’s popularity, the dress sparked a wave of copycat designs, with several other designers still opting for a similar silhouette years later.

Following in Kate’s footsteps, Meghan herself was spotted wearing a blue wrap fronted dress as she attended an Instagram dinner back in 2016.

Although the dress was not a direct copy, and featured a sleeveless design and shorter hemline, it was still similar enough to make fans at home wonder if Meghan had indeed been inspired by Kate’s memorable look.

Grey Plaid

It isn’t just dresses the Kate and Meghan have shared similar taste in, as the pair have also emulated each other’s outwear too in the past.

In December 2017, Kate kept the winter chill at bay in a chic and stylish LK Bennett coat.

One month later, Meghan also opted for a similar coat by brand Theory, as she attended a public engagement in January 2018.

Regal in Red

In 2016 both royals opted to make a memorable entrance in red, as they mirrored each other’s style choices just mere months apart.

Once again it was Meghan leading the way in a stunning red dress with sweetheart bodice as she stepped out in true regal style to attend the Today show in July.

Two months later, Kate would wear a very similar gown to attend a reception at Government House in September, albeit with an asymmetric neckline.

Both dresses appeared to be of a similar length and cut, with the fashionable a-line silhouette flattering both women.

Lace gown

While many of the outfits worn by the pair are simply similar and not identical, on one occasion both Kate and Meghan did opt to wear the exact same dress by designer Diane von Furstenberg, albeit with a subtle difference.

In 2012, Meghan first donned the designer’s Zarita dress, which featured a lined mini-dress with sheer lace sleeves and overlay.

Kate also opted to wear the dress in 2017, albeit this time in a longer hem length, as she transformed the elegant cocktail dress into a stately gown while attending a royal engagement.
