Best 90s and 00s perfumes you can still shop today from £13

Nineties fashion is having a major moment right now, but it’s not just low-rise jeans, micro mini skirts and butterfly clips making a comeback in 2022; throwback fragrances have also seen a spike in sales this year, with Gen Z sniffing out nostalgic scents to match their new style.

According to sales data from Perfume Direct, some of the best-selling perfumes created in the 90s and 00s eras, such as Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, CK One and Britney Spears Curious, have risen in popularity since the release of this year’s spring/summer fashion collections.

“Sales of some of the noughties’ most popular fragrances are on the rise as people embrace everything that the early 1990s and 2000s had to offer,” says Jonny Webber from Perfume Direct. “Fragrance has the power to instantly transport us back to a moment in time, evoking memories and giving us the feel good factor that a lot of people are craving right now.”

He continues: “While many millennials might not be rushing to dust off their old 00s hipster jeans, a perfume is the perfect way to embrace the trend and relive their youth.”

Another possible reason for the sudden popularity of 90s and 00s perfumes? They often don’t come with the hefty price tag associated with modern fragrances, with most bottles retailing at less than £30.

So whether you’re a 90s baby looking to transport yourself back to your favourite era or you’re simply keeping up with trends, below are the top retro perfumes set to make a huge comeback this summer…

Britney Spears Curious, from £13.99 here

Curious was the first perfume created by Britney Spears and although it was a big hit when it launched in 2004, the scent has risen in popularity following the recent ‘Free Britney’ movement, and Perfume Direct says it’s currently the website’s best-selling Y2K fragrance too. Just like the singer, this floral fragrance is lively and sensual, with notes of magnolia and vanilla-infused musk.

Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, from £41.99 here

First launched in 1993, JPG’s Classique became a fragrance favourite in that decade, and has remained a best-seller for almost 30 years. With an uplifting and intoxicating aroma of fruity orange blossom, ginger and sweet rose, we predict that it’ll be at the top of Gen Z’s shopping list this year.

Calvin Klein CK One,from £16.99 here

You may recognise this crisp, cool scent from your boyfriend’s current aftershave collection, but believe it or not, it’s been around since 1994. One of the first ever unisex fragrances, CK One was launched at the height of the supermodel era, just after Kate Moss’ iconic topless Calvin Klein photoshoot. If there’s one fragrance you need to relive the 90s, it’s this one.

Clinique Happy,from £25.99 here

Released back in 1998, Clinique’s Happy scent was favoured by many teens living in the Y2K era. Fresh and summery with a hint of citrus, this fragrance does what it says on the bottle – makes you happy.

Calvin Klein Eternity, from £22.99 here

Calvin Klein’s Eternity perfume was also created 1998 and has remained a cult favourite ever since. The throwback fragrance is inspired by the idea of everlasting love, featuring floral heart notes of lily, jasmine, violet and rose.
