Laila Morse is a 75-year-old actress from South East London and has starred in EastEnders since 2000.

Her real name is Maureen Oldman, however, she changed it to launch herself as an actress.

Laila was raised in South East London by a single mother who encouraged all of her three children to act.

Kathleen passed away just months following Gary’s Oscar win for Darkest Hour.

Gary and Laila have another sister called Jackie.

With no formal training, Laila made her acting debut in 1997, starring in the drama Nil By Mouth written and produced by Gary Oldman which won a BAFTA Best Original Screenplay.

Laila has said that Gary wanted “something gritty” so asked her to try out playing the part of Janet.

At the time, she was age 51 working as her brother's driver and also in a betting shop.

It was clear she has a natural flair for acting, and the performance won her Most Promising Newcomer at the 1998 British Independent Film Awards.

In 2000, she starred in Love, Honour and Obey alongside Ray Winstone and Sadie Frost.

The same year, she was cast in EastEnders as the grandmother of the Slater sisters, Big Mo Harris.

She has said she “was petrified” of acting on the show and it took her three years before she felt comfortable on set.

Writing in her autobiography Just a Mo, Laila said: "Making the transition from viewer to cast member was hard."

The actress stayed on EastEnders until 2016 and then rejoined the cast in 2018.

Laila has also had several reality TV appearances including an appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2013.

In 2012 she took part in the 7th series of ITV skating show Dancing on Ice, and she also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef in 2016.

Laila married Gerald Bromfield in 1962, and the couple had two children together, Gerry, 51, and Tracy, 56.

However, Laila divorced Gerald in 1970.
