IT’S no fun getting old but at least there are some perks to look forward to.
Pensioners are entitled to discounts and offers on everything from bus travel and meals to football season tickets.
But many miss out as they don’t know they qualify for them. Today we look at some of the perks on offer.
FREE TRANSPORT: People on the state pension in England can apply for a free bus pass, while those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can get it at 60.
Lucky Londoners who are 60 and over can get a 60+ London Oyster photocard for free bus and Tube journeys in the capital.
Train travellers can also use a Senior Railcard from the age of 60 to get a third off off-peak journeys. The railcard is £30 for a year or £70 for three years.
ENTERTAINMENT: Cinema chains including Odeon offer tickets from just £3 for over-60s. This includes tea, coffee and biscuits served before the film.
SEASON TICKETS: Football, rugby and cricket clubs offer senior discounts on season and match tickets. At Chelsea, for example, the cheapest season tickets this year are £750 for an adult, or £380 for a senior.
SHOPS/RESTAURANTS: Ask your favourite shops and restaurants if they do senior discounts. Farmhouse Inns offers a Golden Years menu for over-60s where a main plus any starter or dessert is £6.99.
Over-60s with a Boots Advantage Card get double points when buying own-brand products — spend £50 in Boots a year and you’ll get £4 back.
MEDICINE: In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, prescriptions are free for everyone, but in England, over-60s can get free prescriptions, rather than paying £9.35 per item.
BENEFITS: People who have reached state pension age and are on low incomes may be able to claim Pension Credit.
There are two parts to this — Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. To find out if you are eligible, call 0800 99 1234. The average weekly amount of pension credit is £58 — or more than £3,000 a year
