With Christmas fast approaching, there are endless tubs of chocolate and sweet treats everywhere we turn.  

But fresh research has revealed just how much you should be eating – and it is far less than anyone with a sweet tooth would hope. 

UK-based parenting retailer Play Like Mum looked into the recommended portion sizes and nutritional value of some of the UK’s favourite Christmas treats to reveal how much we should really be eating to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.

The research found a 650g tub of Quality Streets should contain approximately 33 servings, which works out as just two sweets per serving.

However, when it comes to Toblerone, just one individual triangle per serving is recommended, with each one containing 19.5g of sugar. 

However, if chocolate coins are your guilty pleasure, 2.6 of the golden treats are recommended, while the study also found just four segments of Terry’s Chocolate Orange should be eaten, which contain 164 calories portion.

And Christmas dinner isn’t officially complete until the Quality Street Mint Matchmakers have been passed around, but according to the research, you shouldn’t be helping yourself to anymore than four sticks.

But if your family are more partial to After Eight Mints, then it’s advised you half that amount – and take just two. 

From crisps and biscuits to sweets, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a few weeks of overindulgence.  

But with many of our favourites being sold in family-sized packs, it begs the question, how often do we really share?

Based on an adult’s advised daily intake, the research found that shockingly, the recommended serving size of Sour Cream and Onion Pringles is 13 individual crisps.

It also unveiled the advised serving of Tescos Scottish Shortbread is one biscuit, while Cadburys Festive Friends is four. 

And for those who have a sweet tooth, the recommendation for Bip’s Candy Cane is just one cane.
