Lesbian penguin couple at UK tourist spot raise adopted chick as gender-neutral

A lesbian penguin couple are raising their chick as gender-neutral after they adopted it four months ago.

Mums Rocky and Marama and their chick, which is yet to be named, live at the Sea Life centre in London.

It is the first time the aquarium has had an animal which is neither male or female.

To help identify the penguin, it has been tagged with a purple ID band on its wing.

According to the tourist attraction they chose purple as it is seen as gender-neutral too.

They added that if the penguin does eventually get named, it will be a "gender-neutral name such as Kelly, Alex, or Charlie".

The Gentoo Penguin couple adopted the unnamed chick after they demonstrated they were ready to become parents.

The egg – which was one of two born to its birth mother – was moved to relieve her of the pressure of raising two chicks.

General manager at Sea Life London, Graham McGrath, said: "While the decision may ruffle a few feathers, gender neutrality in humans has only recently become a widespread topic of conversation.

"However, it is completely natural for penguins to develop genderless identities as they grow into mature adults.
