Full glam is usually on the agenda for Love Island contestants, but this year we’re loving the movement towards natural, glossy beauty. While previous years have seen trends like neutral matte lips (Faye, we’re looking at you) shine, this year it’s all about barely-there beauty – well, for the daytime anyway.
One trend we’re seeing time and time again on day dates and poolside is juicy lips: a glossy lip look straight out of the 90s that sees wearers coat their lips in thick, slightly tinted glosses. If you’re struggling to conjure up an example, think JLo in Love Don’t Cost a Thing or Blu Cantrell in Breathe.
If you were born in the 80s or 90s, you’ll also vividly remember carrying around a tube – if not several – of roll-on or dab-on lipgloss. In the UK, we memorably had Lipsmackers, Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes and Natural Collection’s Tinted Balm Tubes. Now, we have a new generation of lip glosses that have taken over from those retro buys.
The exact glosses being used in the villa to give Islanders like Indiyah, Ekin-Su and Amber their plump pouts are Fenty’s Gloss Bomb Heat Lip Luminiser,£19 here, Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker,£9.99 here, Revolution Shimmer Bomb Gloss,£5 here, and 17 Lip Boost & Shine Gloss,£4 here.
This juicy lips trend is similar to the trending gym lips trend going viral on TikTok at the moment. The only difference between the looks is that gym lips incorporates a bit of lip liner, while juicy lips is all about the gloss. The term “gym lips” was coined by makeup artistKelli Anne Sewell, who thought up the technique, which involves overlining your lips with a pencil that is very similar to your natural lip colour, before layering a nourishinglip balmor mask over the top. It adds a little “something” to your look without requiring a full face of makeup application – nicknamed as such because Kelli usually wears the combo to the gym.
"You can wear it to the airport, you can wear it to the shop for errands, whatever you want […] it's just picking a lip liner that's actually similar to your lip colour. Not something darker, not something lighter, just similar to your lip colour and then a lip mask. And it's catching on because I'm getting tagged in it 24/7!” Kelli said of this trend.
Juicy lips or gym lips, there’s no denying gloss is the way to go this summer.
