My doctor and I fell for each other but he's suddenly gone distant

DEAR DEIDRE: MY favourite hospital doctor has fallen in love with me, and I feel the same. But now he has said he can’t see me.

I’ve been seeing him for two years because of my skin problems. He’s a dermatologist.

He’s in his 50s and married with kids – I noticed the photos on his desk – and I’m 39, single and looking for love. Whenever I have an appointment with him, he flirts with me, smiles and winks.

He’s never touched me, although he held my hand for a long time when he shook it, and he holds the door open for me, which he doesn’t for other patients.

But the last time I had a face-to-face appointment, it was with his colleague, and she said he’d handed over my file.

When I bumped into him in the waiting room, he seemed very nervous and said he is now only seeing new patients. I know this isn’t true. It hurts so much that I’ll never be able to see him again.

DEIDRE SAYS: Sometimes, when someone takes a special interest in you, it can feel like they have romantic feelings – especially if you really like them. You have no proof he feels the same. He’s always acted professionally.

Even if he did have feelings, doctor-patient relationships are forbidden.

Talking to someone could help you get over this. Contact Supportline for confidential help ( or call 01708 765 200). My support pack, Finding The Right Partner For You, may help you meet someone.
