Neighbours UK broadcasts will not catch up with Australia any time soon

Channel 5 has confirmed that UK transmissions of Neighbours will not catch up with those of Australia any time soon, due to the broadcaster’s ‘full schedule.’

The decision was taken back in March to ration out episodes of the long-running soap due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the soap’s Australian broadcaster 10 Peach didn’t do so, and with production having been able to continue, it didn’t take long for UK viewers to fall significantly behind.

Neighbours resumed its five-episode-a-week pattern in May, but — with Australia also continuing to broadcast five a week — the UK remains behind.

Fans had been hoping that Channel 5 would catch up with Australian transmissions once more, but the broadcaster has confirmed that this won’t happen any time soon.

A Channel 5 spokesperson said: ‘Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainties surrounding production, Channel 5 took a precautionary measure to reduce the number of Neighbours episodes earlier this year, ensuring that dedicated viewers could enjoy the soap for as long as possible.

‘Currently, Channel 5’s full schedule means it is unlikely that we will be able to catch up with the transmission of episodes in Australia in the near future.

‘Neighbours will return to UK screens on the 4th January 2021, and we hope that viewers will continue to enjoy watching Neighbours with the profound affection that we know many of them hold for the soap.

Neighbours celebrated its 35th anniversary earlier this year, with a spectacular week of late-night specials, which saw evil Finn Kelly’s (Rob Mills) reign of terror come to an end.

Neighbours continue tomorrow at 1pm on Channel 5.
