Oprah Winfrey Gives Straightforward Response to Why She Won't Be the Godmother of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Daughter Lilibet

Oprah Winfrey‘s name was in the headlines after she sat down with Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex for a primetime special in March 2021. Some questioned whether she was too soft on the pair by not asking tough questions or challenging any claims, and others wanted to know why Oprah didn’t reach out to the palace for a response to the allegations the Sussexes made before the interview aired.

Following the birth of Meghan and Harry’s daughter, Lilibet Diana, on June 4, Lady O started sharing headlines with the couple again as everyone wanted to know if she would be their new baby’s godmother. Oprah though confirmed that she will not and gave a pretty straightforward reason why she won’t.

Meghan and Harry’s biographer brought up the notion of Oprah possibly being one of Lilibet’s godparents

Soon after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their second child, royal fans began giving their picks of who they think would be the godmother and a few A-list celebrities came up. Oprah’s name was also thrown out there by the prince and Suits star’s biographer Omid Scobie, who has been called the Sussexes’ unofficial spokesperson.

“If one of those godparents is Oprah–and I’m not saying that she is–then you can understand why perhaps they want to keep that to themselves because even Oprah sitting down to interview them was controversial enough in itself,” the royal biographer told The Sun.

Oprah reveals why you can rule her out as Lili’s godmother

Following Scobie’s comment and all the speculation that came with it, Oprah decided to set the record straight herself by revealing that she is not the godmother because well, she “doesn’t need to be.”

“I don’t need to be a godmother. I mean, I’m a godmother by default. I’m a neighbor, I’m a friend,” the media mogul stated during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The legendary talk show host then gave her thoughts about why her age wouldn’t make her the best choice saying: “I think you probably need someone younger to be the godmother.”

Fellow celebrity George Clooney previously confirmed he’s not Archie’s godfather

Oprah isn’t the first celebrity royal fans thought was selected as a godparent to Meghan and Harry’s baby. After the birth of their son, many were convinced that George Clooney was asked to be Archie’s godfather until the actor put those rumors to rest.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor told the late-night host that he was too busy with his own stuff to be anyone’s godfather. “That would be a bad idea. I shouldn’t be the godfather. I’m a father of twins; I can barely do that,” Clooney joked, before adding: “I’m not going to be the godfather. I promise you that… [I] should not be anyone’s godfather.”

As for Lili’s godparents, a few other famous names floated around are Serena Williams and Katherine McPhee. However, we probably won’t ever find out if that’s true as Meghan and Harry will likely keep those details private just as did with Archie’s godparents.
