Radford family of 22 spend £5k on presents and sweet traditions for lavish Christmas

Christmas is often a busy time for many of us. From finding the perfect gift for a loved one through to preparing a festive family meal with all the trimmings, it can certainly take a lot of planning to make sure the day goes smoothly.

But for one family in particular, Britain’s biggest family The Radfords planning such a large scale celebration can at time prove to be a pretty hefty logistical challenge.

With 22 children in total and a further 11 grandchildren, Sue and Noel Radford have definitely got their work cut out for them as they slave away to brace for the upcoming festivities, but what exactly does it take to make such a large scale celebration a success?

Clueing in curious fans on their festive preparations, the family have been documenting their holiday journey for a number of years now – and it’s definitely not for the faint hearted.

In order to accommodate so many mouths to feed, the family’s Christmas Dinner easily sets the couple back several hundred pounds a year, as they splash out on a traditional dinner with all the trimmings.

But it isn’t just one meal that the family celebrate at Christmas, with a month long festive December having kicked off earlier this month with a special Elf on the Shelf themed breakfast.

Sharing a glimpse of what the breakfast entailed, plenty of red and gold themed decorations could be seen sitting atop a snowman printed table cloth, while cheerful red plates and matching Christmas crackers provided the perfect way to kick the season off in style.

In a personal touch specific to the family, the table spread also featured a large red bauble shaped helium balloon, with the words "Special elf delivery, The Radfords” printed in a white cursive script.

This year the family have also revealed they’re cutting back on the number of Christmas trees dotted throughout their 10 bedroomed home, with the previous seven now reduced to just two.

That doesn’t mean they’re scrimping elsewhere however, with the couple said to have splashed out around £250 on each child, with the total coming in at well over £5000!

Additionally, each child is also gifted with a Christmas Eve box of goodies, which in previous years has always featured a pair of pyjamas, hot chocolate, mug and sweets.

Then when the big day finally arrives, the whole family gather around to open their presents together, before settling down for the highly anticipated Christmas Dinner, which comes in at around £300 for the one meal – roughly the same amount as their weekly shop.

Thankfully all of the Christmas preparations don’t just fall to one person in the Radford house, with mum Sue taking the lead on the Christmas shopping, while doting dad Noel, who runs the family bakery, spends the day cooking the monumental feast.

Typically the family will enjoy a Turkey dinner, with around three birds in total needed to feed all the hungry mouths, but they have also been known to mix it up with gammon and even beef on occasion.

Sharing a little more about the logistics behind their Christmas experience, Noel previously told This Morning hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes: “We prep a lot the night before on Christmas Eve,” back in 2018.

He also added: “We’ve got a table we can fit 16 around, we’ve got an island in the kitchen for another six and some double up.”

For 2022, Sue revealed in November she had already begun shopping for presents as she shared a glimpse at her car boot brimming with gifts on Instagram. Yet despite looking prepared to many, Sue admitted she was struggling to “get in the mood” for the upcoming holiday as she lambasted her own lack of organisation.

"Christmas shopping has begun. Anyone else like me this year and so not organised?,” she told her 493,000 followers. "Just can't seem to get in the mood for it this year."
