Black liquid liner, rosy cheeks, big hair – some beauty trends just never seem to go out of fashion.

And red lipstick is one such trend. A simple slick of scarlet suits everyone, lifts your mood and instantly makes you look “done”. Keep the rest of your make-up minimal to really let your lips do the talking, or complement it with a flick of black eyeliner for added glam.

And so if there’s one make-up product that’s worth spending a little extra on, it’s this. Especially now, as the right shade will see you right through from autumn to Christmas.

Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Lunaison, buy it here for £34

Shade: Madge Red

Featuring pretty, limited edition packaging, this creamy lipstick has a subtle sparkle to give lips a party-perfect finish. Madge Red is a rich burgundy that looks especially gorgeous on dark skin tones.

Tester says: “Though the outside layer of the lipstick looks very sparkly, it applies to a nice iridescent finish – which made my lips look a lot more plump than usual. The tip was sharp so I didn’t need a liner, and I thought it gave the best of both worlds between a matte and a cream formula.”

Described as a berry rose, this matte shade will perfectly complement mid to dark skin tones. The lipstick also features an angled square tip for precise application, and the formula contains orchid extract to keep lips hydrated.

Tester says: “I’m used to pointed bullet designs but the square tip on this made it really easy to line lips at the same time as filing them in. I love how matte the effect was but it didn’t make my lips feel at all dry. The colour lasted quite a while without fading, too.”

Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Intimatte Matte Lipstick, buy it here for £27

Shade: Not Flirting

This vivid orange-based red looks gorgeous against warm and olive skin tones, and is more autumn appropriate than a coral. While the finish is matte, there’s hyaluronic acid blended into the formula for comfortable and lightweight wear.

Tester says: “I genuinely did a mini gasp when I twisted this lipstick up – the colour is mesmerisingly bright and not like any other red I’ve seen before. It transferred easily onto my lips without dragging and it didn’t budge for hours. My new favourite.”

MAC Powder Kiss Liquid Lip Colour, buy it here for £19

Shade: Devoted to Chili

A warm brick red with a slight rusty undertone, it’s perfect for those who suit warmer shades but want something a tad more understated than a punchy bright. The texture is mousse-like but dries into a non-transferable matte finish.

Tester says: “Liquid lipsticks often go a bit splodgy on application but the hourglass applicator tip meant I managed to create a good shape without needing much correction. Be warned, it sets very fast so take your time to apply it neatly as the colour lasted me all day (and through wearing a face covering).”

Dolce & Gabbana Passionlips Cream to Powder Matte Lip Pen, buy it here for £36

Shade: Delicious Cherry

This deep, pigmented red features a blue-toned base, which usually looks flattering on fair skin. The pencil design makes for on-the-go application, and the finish is long-lasting and matte.

Tester says: “It smells lovely, like vanilla, so I nearly wanted to eat it. I’ve been looking for a red that isn’t too bright and isn’t too dark, and this is my ideal in-between shade. I have a light, cool skin tone and I found it really flattering.”

Coated in glitter and engraved with snowflakes, this creamy formula gives lips a slightly glitzy finish. The Shimmery Red shade is warm and vibrant and would suit warm, olive and darker skin tones.

Tester says: “The packaging is so pretty that it makes me feel very fancy whenever I get it out of my handbag. The snowflake design on the bullet is also very cute. Though at first glance it looks slightly burgundy in hue, it applies to a warm, deep and creamy red.”

NARS Audacious Lipstick, buy it here for £26

Shade: Rita Scarlet

This pillarbox red is warm in colour but still has a slightly blue undertone, making it ideal for most skin tones. It has a creamy finish that promises not to bleed and a sharp tip for defining lips.

Tester says: “As much as I love a matte finish, sometimes a creamy red just makes me feel less 'done’. It does transfer onto my coffee mug, but the pigment is so strong that I find it keeps my lips tinted, even after the formula has faded.”
