Robyn, who now lives in Melbourne, listed the weather and the popularity of going barefoot as some of the surprising thing she encountered. She has been living here for five years and still can’t get her head around some Australian habits, but she’s obsessed with others

‘Australian things that sent me into a coma when I first moved here from the UK,’ Robyn captioned her now viral TikTok.

The number one habit that caught her off guard was seeing people walking around the supermarket or other stores in bare feet.

‘This shocked me. You would never catch anyone that wasn’t on a beach in bare feet in the UK,’ she said.

The second surprising thing was the fact alcohol isn’t sold in the supermarket.

‘I had no idea this wasn’t a thing. I was first like, “where do I go and buy some wine from?” and someone told me to go to bottle-O and I was like “what’s a a bottle-O?”

‘I had no idea. It shocked me to the bones,’ she said.

She was also taken aback by the weather reaching temperatures as high as 42 degrees Celsius.

‘When I first lived here I lived in Sydney and it wiped me out, absolutely killed me,’ she said.

However, there were two discoveries that came as a nice surprise.

The first was lemon, lime and bitters, a popular cocktail in Australia.

‘This surprise was in the best way possible. Thank you so much for introducing me to this, it is amazing stuff. It’s like liquid gold,’ she said.

She was also impressed by espresso martinis, another popular cocktail.

‘I’m pretty sure you can get espresso martinis in the UK? But I’m from a small coastal town,’ she explained.

5 culture shocks moving from the UK to Australia:

1. Seeing people walking around the supermarket or other stores in bare feet

2. The fact alcohol isn’t sold in the supermarket

3. The weather reaching temperatures as high as 42 degrees

4. The existence of a cocktail called lemon, lime and bitters

5. Finding out espresso martinis exist

Her followers were entertained by the list, however, one feature caused a split in opinion amongst Aussies.

Several people shared their love for going without shoes.

‘I’ve been fighting against shoes since primary school lol. I just hate shoes,’ one woman said.

However, others don’t agree with going barefooted in places other than the beach.

‘I’m Aussie and that still creeps me out people in bare feet in the supermarket,’ one man said.

‘Barefoot in the supermarket makes me feel ill,’ a woman agreed.
