You helped me move on from my uncle's sexual abuse

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I was a girl, my uncle abused me. Earlier this year, he was finally up in court to face trial.

Knowing I’d have to see him again, and how stressful it would be, I wrote to you for support.

You reassured me that I had the strength to face him and to be cross-examined by his barrister.

You also put me in touch with NAPAC, the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (napac.org.uk).

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough evidence to convict my uncle.

I was gutted but glad to have had my day in court, and told the truth.

Now that it’s over, my husband and I have decided to change our lives and fulfil a long-held dream.

We’re selling our home and buying a canal boat, and plan to travel up and down the waterways.

I know things won’t be easy but now, at 53, I feel much stronger and at peace with myself.

Thanks for holding my hand, Deidre.
