Price is still what matters the most to British holidaymakers when considering future travel, a new survey has revealed.

In a poll of UK adults, 29 per cent named price as the number one factor when booking future holidays while only 19 per cent chose safety of the destination.

Meanwhile, less than five per cent said they would wait until there is a coronavirus vaccine to travel again, with 40 per cent saying they aim to make their own judgments on when it is safe.

The research, carried out by Skyscanner, also found that 41 per cent of travellers would be persuaded to travel with providers who have ‘superior hygiene and cleanliness levels’.

Airlines with clearly communicated, adaptable ticketing will be favoured, according to Skyscanner, as 75 per cent of respondents stated that they would prefer to book flexible or fully refundable tickets.

The flight comparison website says that its latest survey, of 2,274 people, shows positive signs for the travel industry as the ‘factors indicated as important to consumers to be able to consider future travel, beyond the lifting of restrictions, can be determined by travel providers themselves’.

It adds that looking to South Korea, where travel restrictions have recently been relaxed, there has been a massive 803 per cent increase in search volumes for domestic travel.

Jo McClintock, global brand director at Skyscanner, said: ‘Our latest research reveals an increasing amount of pragmatism among travellers when it comes to considering future travel.

‘Whilst there is still a large amount of uncertainty, we are seeing consumers come to terms with a new normal and shaping their attitudes towards travel and its provision accordingly.

‘Moves from travel providers to instil consumer confidence through enhanced safety measures signal early steps into this future.

‘We are already seeing some promising initial signs from other countries like South Korea where infection curves have flattened.’

Last week Britons were warned that summer holidays abroad ‘will not be possible’ after the government announced a 14-day quarantine for all international arrivals into Britain.

Speaking to Philip Schofield on This Morning, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock poured cold water over some Britons’ plans to fly abroad this summer, as holiday companies revealed a spike in interest for trips abroad.

Asked whether ‘summer was cancelled’, Mr Hancock told the ITV programme: ‘I think that’s likely to be the case.

‘It is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer. I just think that’s a reality of life.’
