Three unique UK staycation ideas from UNESCO sites to knitting trips

One of the best parts about booking a staycation is the opportunity to see a completely different side of the UK.

That could mean learning a new skill, discovering something about Britain’s history or even connecting with a country on the other side of the world.

We’ve found three experiences you can do this summer which will allow you to do exactly that.

So what are you waiting for?

Read on below to find out more.

Olympic effort

Missing the Olympics? Don’t worry, the Paralympics start on August 24. In the meantime, check out a new exhibition at London’s Japan House that looks back at the first time Tokyo hosted the Games.

Tokyo 1964: Designing Tomorrow is full of fascinating objects and memorabilia – from one of the torches that travelled around the country, to posters and brochures, as well as the specially made kimonos worn by the women who presented the medals.

You’ll also see the first ever pictograms – symbols designed to give visitors information such as where to get food or find a loo.

Until Nov 7, free, japanhouselondon.

Holidays with heritage

Wales has a new Unesco world heritage site – the slate landscape of the north west.

Located in Snowdonia, the unique environment is home to the material that formed the roofs of many buildings throughout the 19th century, with the slate from its quarries exported around the globe.

Stay in nearby Trawsfynydd in Yr Hen Stabal cottage.

From £498, sykescottages.co.uk.

Feeling crafty

Inspired by Olympic diver Tom Daley’s poolside needle skills?

Arena Travel offers knitting-related holidays, including Stitch Yourself Happy, a three-night break in the Cotswolds that blends yoga and knitting (from £369pp), a five-night Spirit of Shetland knitting trip, where experts teach the Fair Isle technique (from £1,675pp), or three nights at Britain’s biggest craft festival, Stitchtopia, in Stratford-upon-Avon, with sewing and knitting workshops.
